The UCT Writing Centre

If receive your first topic for an essay or assignment and you feel stuck or you’re struggling, make an appointment  at the UCT Writing Centre. During the appointment you’ll meet with a Writing Centre consultant (a trained postgraduate student). During the appointment, you can either focus on a draft of the essay or assignment you’ve put together, or you can spend your time analysing the topic and creating a plan for you to go about finishing the essay or assignment. Remember that you can visit the Writing Centre at any stage, whether you have a topic and some rough notes, or an early draft of the essay.

While you’re waiting for the appointment do as much background reading on the topic as possible. Does the topic itself mention any sources? Did you get a reading list? Did your lecturer mention any readings or writers in class? Try and make some notes. If you find this difficult, don’t worry; your consultant can offer some tips.
