Dear First Year Students,
As Director of the First Year Experience let me be among the first to welcome you to the University of Cape Town! You are embarking on a wonderful new (more independent!) chapter of your life. Most importantly, you are laying the foundation for your personal and career development.
UCT will provide you with the strongest possible learning environment to help you nurture and achieve your academic goals. Even so your academic success depends on how well you take responsibility for your own education. Your first year experience is, for the most part, what you make of it. Here is some advice I like to share with incoming students to ensure you are getting the most out of your first year: http://www.ched.uct.ac.za/news/12-things-all-first-years-must-do.
As you settle into life at UCT, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me (firstname.lastname@example.org) if you think there are things (e.g., you’re feeling a bit lost or overwhelmed, you don’t know where things are on campus, you think there’s something the FYE should be doing for FY students) I can assist you with. I am always happy to hear from students.
Everything of the very best for your first year (and indeed for your whole undergraduate career).
